How to Help your Car Battery Live Longer

The potential battery life for each car varies depending on the type of battery that’s used. Your circumstances can influence the longevity of your car battery’s life. Climate or extreme temperatures can take a toll on your battery life, which cause it to wear out sooner. Here are some tips on how to help your car battery live longer:

  • Maintain Cleanliness – Debris can build up on batteries rapidly, especially if you live in a dusty area where dirt roads are not uncommon. Try to clean battery terminals every two to three months, or just when you change your oil. This can be done using a wire brush or taking it to a trusted mechanic.
  • Turn off lights – Some cars have automatic headlights that turn on and off when needed, but for those without that feature, it’s important to remember to turn off headlights in the car when exiting. If this is not done, you can waste your car’s battery and find that your car does not start the next time you get in.
  • Double Check Doors – Once in a while, you may forget to close your trunk or car door all the way when exiting the vehicle. When that happens, interior lights stay on, causing your battery to drain while you’re away. If you think you didn’t hear the door close correctly, take a second to check it a second time.
  • Routine inspections – Getting a routine inspection is a good idea even if you don’t need one. They may come across a problem you didn’t even know was there. They can even tell you the status of your battery life, so you can be prepared. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
